Retrieving Independence, Inc. (RI) is a nonprofit organization started in 2006 to train and place highly skilled service dogs to assist in “retrieving independence” for people with mobility disabilities, seizure disorders and children with Autism. Our dogs meet or exceed standards set by Assistance Dog International. (adi.org)
We presently operate from a 4,200 square foot state of the art facility located in Linden, TN. We began raising and training dogs which we purchased or were donated by breeders. We soon learned that to be able to grow our organization and to place quality dogs with the health and temperament to meet our standards it was necessary to start our own breeding program. This took many years.
With the birth of our third successful litter of 9 beautiful Labrador puppies we have now been able to initiate a prison training program called “Serving With Canine“. The program began in August 2012 in cooperation with the Tennessee Department of Corrections and will be located at the Turney Industrial Complex in Only, Tennessee.
A new Board of Directors for RI was installed in July, 2012. We look toward to moving our main operations to Spring Hill, TN in January, 2013. This will be a more central location which will allow us to grow and more readily involve surrounding communities. Our facility located in Linden will become our Puppy and Early Learning Center. It is where our puppies will be born. It is also where the puppies used for our prison program will be trained and socialized until the age of 4 month before being placed in the prison.
The future is bright at RI. With each wag of a puppies tail, we look forward to being able to help an increasing number of people with disabilities find confidence, dignity and autonomy through partnering with a service dog.
